Judo kakemono (kakejiku) hanging scroll — The Way of Judo

This handcrafted Japanese kakemono scroll features the bold characters 柔道 (Judo) — representing the lifelong pursuit of discipline, respect, and self-improvement through the Way of Judo.

Rooted in the philosophy of Judo founder Jigoro Kano (嘉納治五郎), Judo is far more than a martial art or an Olympic sport. While it is celebrated around the world for competition and athletic excellence, Kano envisioned Judo as a lifelong path of self-cultivation. Through disciplined practice, practitioners strive to strengthen the body, refine the mind, and develop character.

At the heart of this philosophy are two timeless principles: Seiryoku Zenyo (精力善用), the best use of one's energy, and Jita Kyoei (自他共栄), mutual welfare and benefit. Together, they remind us that Judo is not simply about becoming stronger than others, but about using our strength wisely and contributing to the well-being of those around us.

For judoka around the world, this kakemono scroll is more than a piece of Japanese calligraphy — it is a connection to the birthplace of Judo.

Each kakemono scroll is individually handcrafted in Japan over three weeks by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. We hope it will become a lifelong reminder of the philosophy and values established by Jigoro Kano, accompanying you both on and off the tatami.

A Kakemono Scroll is your Silent Teacher

A kakemono scroll does not speak.
But it is always there.

For centuries, Japanese people have displayed words of Budo, Zen teachings, and guiding principles for life in their dojos and homes. They were not displayed only for their beauty. They were placed where they could be seen every day — to help people remember the values by which they wished to live.

Courage. Discipline. Respect. Harmony. And the strength to remain true to oneself.

A kakemono scroll says nothing. Yet the words written upon it can quietly calm the mind and remind us of what truly matters. That is why we call a kakemono scroll your Silent Teacher.

More Than Art.
It's Spirit.

Note: Because this kakemono scroll features only two characters, it is approximately 15 cm (6 in) shorter than our scrolls with three or more characters. Please keep this size difference in mind when placing your order.
